General Questions
Is BlitzChess really free to play?
Absolutely. Playing standard games on our platform is, and always will be, 100% free. Our tournaments may have entry fees to fund the prize pools, but the core experience of battling it out on the 64 squares costs nothing but your brainpower.
How is this different from other chess sites?
Our entire existence is a statement against "pay-to-win" and "luck-based" gaming. We focus exclusively on skill. We don't have distracting ads, we don't sell power-ups, and we are radically transparent about how everything works. It's just pure, unadulterated chess.
Tournaments & Prizes
How do I register for a tournament?
Simple! Head over to our Tournaments page , pick your battleground, and then go to the Contacts page . Fill out the form, making sure to select the correct tournament from the dropdown list. That's it. You're in.
How are prizes delivered?
It depends on the prize. Virtual goods (like custom board skins or titles) are applied to your profile automatically. For physical prizes and cash, our support team will contact you via the email you used for registration within 48 hours of the tournament's conclusion to arrange the delivery. No funny business.
What are the tournament formats (Arena, Swiss)?
Arena: A fast-paced format where you play as many games as you can within a set time limit. Points are awarded for wins, and sometimes for streaks. It's chaotic and fun.
Swiss System: A more traditional format. You play a fixed number of rounds against opponents with a similar score to you. No one gets eliminated. The player with the most points at the end wins. This is a true test of consistency.
Gameplay & Rules
Is there any element of luck or randomness in the game?
No. None. Zero. Zilch. Nada. The game engine uses the established rules of chess. The only variable is the human on the other side of the board. We'd rather lose our queen than add a single line of random-number-generating code to a match.
What is your policy on cheating?
We have a zero-tolerance policy. Using chess engines, asking for help, or any other form of unfair assistance will result in an immediate and permanent ban from all platform activities, including tournaments. We have systems in place to detect this. Play fair, or play elsewhere.
Account & Technical
Why don't you have user registration and passwords?
For simplicity and privacy. We identify players by their chosen username for ratings and tournament play. All official communication and prize claims are handled via the email you provide during tournament registration. This means less data for us to store and less hassle for you. Your skill is your identity, not another password you have to remember.
The site looks weird on my browser. What should I do?
Our site is designed to work on all modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge). If you're experiencing issues, first try clearing your browser's cache. If that doesn't work, please contact us with details about your browser and operating system, and a screenshot if possible. We'll squash that bug.
